The natural characteristics of sterling silver, brass and bronze cause the surface to develop a beautiful patina (tarnish produced by oxidation causing a change in color) over time from exposure to natural oils from one's skin atmospheric elements, and moisture.
You can prevent the pieces from developing this patina over time by storing your pieces of jewelry in an airtight environment like a ziplock bag or container.
To restore the luster on your piece, use a treated polishing cloth on the metal.
For the oxidized sterling pieces, do not polish or rub the blackened parts on the pieces, as it will remove the oxidation. A lacquer is sprayed on the oxidized pieces to protect the surface, but please note that all patinas are a surface treatment and will eventually wear off after constant rubbing or wear.
